Obituary
Dorothy Lee (Dotty) Watson passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on January 15, 2026, in Columbia, Maryland.
Born on May 12, 1940, Dorothy was born to Louis Murphy and Ida Anderson in a small rural town in Waterproof, Louisiana. Dorothy’s early years in a close-knit farming community instilled in her the enduring values of hard work, compassion and service that would guide her throughout her life.
Dorothy met and married Jesse Watson with whom she shared 67 years of devoted marriage until his passing. Their union was blessed with three children: Jesse Watson Jr., Gloria Jenise Watson, and the late Rodney Louis Watson. Their enduring partnership was a testament to love, resilience, and mutual respect. Together they built a family rooted in those same values.
In 1974, the family relocated to Columbia, Maryland where Dorothy continued her professional career with the Social Security Administration. Dorothy’s pursuit of education led her to earn a Master’s degree from the Antioch School of Law- an achievement that marked the beginning of a distinguished career dedicated to public service. Dorothy steadily rose through the ranks from an entry-level position to the Senior Executive Services (SES). Dorothy ultimately retired as Deputy Associate Commissioner-a role that reflected both her expertise and unwavering commitment to improving lives through social policy. Even after retirement, Dorothy continued to serve. As an independent consultant, she was appointed by the President to serve on an advisory panel tasked with providing Congress with practical recommendations for assisting individuals with disabilities.
Beyond her career, Dorothy embraced life with joy and generosity. In retirement, she found fulfillment in volunteering, boating and exploring new places through travel. Dorothy loved line dancing and hiking-activities that reflected both her vibrant spirit and appreciation for movement and nature. A fierce competitor at the card table, Dorothy also relished a good game of Bid Whist among friends and family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Rodney Louis Watson and her sister Elizabeth White.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, her son Jesse Watson Jr. (Debra); her daughter, Gloria Jenise Watson; her loving sister Katherine Tucker and a host of family members and lifelong friends.
Dorothy leaves behind a legacy defined by service to others, intellectual rigor, and joyful living. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her and loved her.
