Gregory John Smith, affectionately known as “Smitty,” was born on June 29, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, to the late John and Anita Marie Smith. He received his early education at Our Lady of Victory in the Bronx and later graduated from William Howard Taft High School, where he distinguished himself as a talented track athlete. His athletic abilities earned him a track scholarship and acceptance to Morgan State University. However, before he could begin his studies, Greg was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he returned home and pursued his education, earning an Associate degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College and later a Bachelor’s degree in History with a Minor in Education from the City College of New York (CCNY).
Following his academic achievements, Gregory dedicated 35 years of service to the United States Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement in January 2003. Throughout his esteemed career, he was frequently recognized for his unwavering dedication and work ethic. Upon his retirement from the USPS, he transitioned into security detail, contracting for the Federal Government until his health began to decline.
Outside of work, Gregory was a man of many passions. He brought an infectious energy to everything he did, whether he was spending time with his family or indulging in his favorite hobbies. He proudly played on the USPS baseball team and was a deeply passionate football fan who faithfully cheered on his Pittsburgh Steelers, even attending Super Bowl games in person. Above all, Gregory loved traveling, especially cruising to see different parts of the world with his devoted wife, Debbie.
Gregory leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 33 years, Debbie Lamont-Smith; his children, Sean (Jessica), Derrick (LaCora), Aisha (Kevin), Timothy (Rhonda); his mother-in-law, Geneva Chappell; and his siblings, Erika, Nora, Sandra, and Rodger. He is also survived by his sister and brothers-in-law, Fontella, Stanley, Ronnie and Donald (Vicki); six cherished grandchildren, Ashlyn, Derrick II, Kevin II, Dylann, Ava and Timothy II; two great-grandchildren, Lamar and Eva; and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anita Marie Smith; his sister, Mary; and his brothers, Johnny and Derwyn Smith.
