Obituary

Jean Ann Gray Matthews (1934–2026), affectionately known as Jean Ann, passed away peacefully at her home in Glenarden, Maryland, at the age of 91.

A graduate of Fairmont Heights High School, she married her lifelong love, Carroll Matthews, in 1952, with whom she raised four children.

Jean dedicated her professional life to the U.S. Bureau of Customs until her retirement in 1992, after which she followed her passion for working with children at the Seabrook Adventist Early Learning Center.

A devoted pillar of Embry African Methodist Episcopal Church, she served as a Pastor’s Steward and led the Georgianna Stewart Women’s Society for over 20 years, earning the distinction of Life Member of the Connectional Women’s Missionary Society.

Beyond her extensive community outreach and faith-based leadership, Jean was a passionate fan of local sports who found great joy in baking, bowling, classic cars, and the soulful comfort of church hymns and spirituals.
