Obituary


On Monday, May 9, 2022, Marie Thomas Corbett, loving wife and mother of four children, passed away at the age of 84, in Columbia, Maryland. Marie was born on May 25, 1937 in Cusseta, Georgia to Jesse and Leta (Byrd) Thomas. Marie was a proud graduate of Spencer High School, Columbus, Georgia, Class of 1956. She received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Bethune Cookman College in 1960, and earned a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A&M in 1973.


Marie was a devoted wife, mother, Army spouse and educator. On November 14, 1959 she married Captain Cleveland Corbett. They raised two daughters, Michelle and Lisa, and two sons, Jeffrey and Mark. For over 30 years, she served as a teacher and guidance counselor in Public Schools on military bases and their surrounding communities in New York, Panama, Georgia, Texas, New Jersey and Maryland. Through her example, Marie instilled in her children and those she taught, the value and importance of education and service.


After her retirement from Montgomery County Public Schools in 1993, Marie enjoyed travelling the World with friends, visiting 33 different countries. She continued her passion for community service, earning recognition for volunteering in the American Red Cross and the Retired Officer’s Wives Club of Fort Meade, Maryland. She enjoyed her role as an area coordinator for the Army Spouses Club of the Greater Washington Area and she cherished her 65 years of service in the sisterhood of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.


Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Leta Thomas. She is survived by her husband Colonel (Ret) Cleveland Corbett, and their four children, Michelle, Lisa, Jeffrey and Mark, her siblings Annie Pearl, James Joseph, Mildred, Everlena, Earnestine, Jessie Mae, Patricia and JoAnne, many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the Howell Funeral Home, Jessup, MD. A viewing will be held from 2:30 – 4:00pm. The memorial service will begin at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to the Marie T. Corbett Scholarship Fund, care of the Pearl Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 178, Columbia, MD., 21045.
