In Loving Memory of Stanley Warren Hawkins
Stanley Warren Hawkins, affectionately known as “Hawk,” “Stan,” or “Coach,” was born on July 9, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa. He peacefully transitioned at his home on the morning of
May 31, 2025.
A man of enduring faith, Stanley was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a pillar of his community. His passion for sports, particularly track and field, football, wrestling, and fishing, was evident to all who knew him. He dedicated countless hours to mentoring youth, sharing not only his knowledge of sports but also life lessons that extended far beyond the playing field. His love for music—especially jazz, gospel, and the blues—and his voracious reading habits further enriched his life and the lives of those around him.
A true Renaissance man, Stanley possessed a wealth of knowledge on a multitude of subjects and was always eager to impart his wisdom to others. Whether you had a problem or simply needed guidance, Stanley was there - ready to listen, advise, and support. His natural leadership and teaching abilities, combined with his integrity and strong character, made him a beloved figure in his community. He never met a stranger and treated everyone with respect, regardless of their background. To know him was to be touched by his kindness, humor, and the countless stories he shared, each filled with love and life lessons.
Stanley graduated from East High School in 1966 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967. He served honorably until his discharge in 1971.
While in the Air Force, he was introduced to Barbara Victoria Harrison - the love of his life, by her father Kenneth Harrison. Stanley and Barbara married in 1972. Together, they built a beautiful family in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where they resided until his passing.
In 1971, Stanley joined the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), serving the Washington, D.C. community with dedication and pride. He worked in the 2nd and 4th Districts before leading the Special Operations Division (Harbor), retiring as a Lieutenant in 1995. Over his career he was entrusted with numerous special appointments, including security detail for Janet Reno– the first woman to serve as US Attorney General. Stanley cherished his time as a police officer, and his family, friends and colleagues often recall his stories with fondness and admiration.
After retiring from MPD, Stanley continued to serve his community through roles in loss prevention at Sears and leading a security contract at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Following his second retirement, he could often be found in his beloved Bowie neighborhood, working on special projects in his yard or garage, surrounded by his wife, close friends, and former colleagues.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marcel Hawkins, and his brothers Gary, Larry, and Thomas “Tommy” Hawkins, and sister Anita Boston.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Victoria Hawkins; children Stanley Hawkins, Jr., Monifa Hawkins, Kyantae (Monica) Hawkins, and Tenee Hawkins; grandchildren Devan Hawkins-Mitchell, Jahlani Hall, Christian Hall, Victoria Hawkins-Mims, Britton Dothard, Lauren Hawkins, Khalil Robert Hawkins, Aaliyah Hawkins, Imani Hawkins, Trenton Hawkins, Stephen Hawkins, Javion Hawkins, Treyvon Hawkins, Kellsie Simpson, Preston Simpson, and Bryton Smith; sisters Patrice Frazier and Paulette (Bill) Fowler; sisters-in-law Maurine Hawkins, Robin Harrison and Dawn Harrison; brother-in-law Kenneth Harrison II; and father-in-law Kenneth Harrison. He also leaves behind a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A celebration of Stanley’s life will take place on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Howell Funeral Home in Jessup, Maryland.
