Obituary

Walter Alexander Harding, lovingly known as “Walt,” “Waldo,” “Grandaddy Waldo,” “Uncle Walter,” “Mr. Walter,” and “W.H.,” passed away on September 19, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on November 19, 1931, Walter blessed his family and friends with nearly a century of memories. His was a long and meaningful life, shaped by an abiding love for family, pride in a job well done, a fiercely independent spirit, and devoted service to his country.

Walter graduated from Cooksville High School in 1948. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1960. After his military service, he built a career as a federal employee, retiring after many years of dedicated service. Walter believed in working hard, caring for his family, and standing on his own two feet. He took genuine pride in his work and remained independent throughout his life; a reflection of the strength and determination that were so much a part of him.

For nearly 50 years, Walter shared his life with his beloved wife, the late Constance Evelyn Bennett Harding. Together, they built a family that was the center of his world. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother, and he took great joy in being surrounded by those he loved. Walter was a proud and deeply respected man, loved not only by his family and close friends but also by the many people whose lives crossed his path. His warmth reached well beyond his immediate family, and it was with genuine affection that so many came to know him as “Uncle Walter.”

Walter was the cherished son of Cossette Harding and Charles Harding, and the brother of Bernard Harding, Carroll Harding, and Jeanette Harding Powell, all who preceded him in death. The family bonds formed in those early years remained an important part of the man he became.

Walter was the proud father of five sons: Darnell (April) Harding, Vince (Ryvonne) Harding, Stuart (Antoinette) Harding, the late Marvin Harding, and Derrick (Holly) Harding. He delighted in being grandfather to Vincent Harding, Sharrieff Harding, Josten Harding, the late Brandon Harding, Jaylin Harding, Kellen Harding, Quenay Webster, Reynard Johnson Jr., Deion Green, Jaelen Green and Christian Harding. He is survived also by his cherished in-laws: Cyril (Alice) Bennett, Carol Williams, Gwendolyn Terrell, and Sheila Ward. His family circle also included many great-grandchildren, in-laws, nieces and nephews, honorary family members, and close friends and acquaintances. Each held a place in his wide and loving circle, and each carries memories of Walter that will continue to be shared for years to come.

Those who knew Walter will remember his sharp mind, quick wit, and thoughtful way of moving through the world. They will remember his strength, his pride, his independence, and the unmistakable love he had for his family. Most of all, they will remember the many ways he made people feel welcomed, connected, and cared for. Walter’s 94 years brought immeasurable meaning to those fortunate enough to share them, and his stories, laughter, wisdom, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
