“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all!,” proclaimed the life of Watenia Nash Brummell who passed away January 30th at the age of eighty-two after a brief illness.
She was a daughter of the late James H. Nash, Sr., and the late Elenora H. Nash of Lynchburg, Virginia. Watenia was one of five sisters and two brothers.
Watenia married the love of her life, George William Brummell, Sr. in 1963, after meeting as students at Virginia State University, and together they gave birth to two children, daughter, Gina (Joel) Bullard and son, George (Tara) William Brummell, Jr.
She will always be a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren: Sydnee Bullard, Joel Bullard II, Estella Brummell, and Savannah Brummell.
She professed her love for Christ at an early age and was baptized at New London United Methodist Church in New London, Virginia. Her devotion to the Lord continued throughout her entire life as she later joined the First Baptist Church of Guildford and as a faithful member served on the trustee board, with her beloved husband George, and later served as the Church Treasurer for over 15 years.
Her passion for learning started with Dr. James Shelton at New London School in Virginia and culminated with the receipt of a degree in Business Education from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.
Watenia’s influential and loving life impacted decades of servant leadership to the Department of Labor and the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. Retiring as an Employee Development Specialist with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), with her final position being that of a highly effective manager of technical programs in the Office of Training and Human Resource Development.
Throughout her life she always found time to serve and support individuals. Whether it was helping others gain employment in the Federal government, under her wise and positive tutelage, or simply advising and imparting knowledge to anyone who needed help.
She is survived by her husband, George William Brummell, Sr., daughter Gina (Joel), and son George, Jr. (Tara), and her grandchildren, Sydnee, Joel II, Estella, and Savannah.
Four sisters: Sara (Charles) Clyburn, Margaret Thomas, Delores Hicks, and Connie (Calvin) Powell; and two brothers: James H. Nash, Jr. (Iris), and Franklin D. Nash, Sr.; brother-in-law, Lawrence Hoover Brummell (Marjorie); three sisters-in-law: Annie M. Hill, Louise Brummell, and Mary Alice Brummell; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
It is with great joy that we celebrate Watenia Nash Brummell’s glorious guarantee and blessed assurance.
